چکیده

CoCrMo samples of varying microstructure and carbon content were electrochemically corroded in vitro and examined by scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction techniques. The rate of corrosion was minimized (80% reduction from icorr = 1396 nA/cm(2) to icorr = 276 nA/cm(2) ) in high-carbon CoCrMo alloys which displayed a coarser grain structure and partially dissolved second phases, achieved by solution annealing at higher temperatures for longer periods of time. The mechanism of degradation was intergranular pitting corrosion, localized at phase boundaries and grain boundaries of high energy (high-angle and low lattice coincidence, Σ11 or higher); grain boundaries of lower energy did not appear to corrode. This suggests the possibility of grain boundary engineering to improve the performance of metal implant devices. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tribocorrosion of Pulsed Plasma-Nitrided CoCrMo Implant Alloy

In the present study, a forged CoCrMo (ISO 5832-12) has been subjected to pulsed plasma treatment in a N2/H2 atmosphere at low temperatures (below 500 C). This treatment resulted in the formation of a layer composed by dispersed chromium nitride particles in a N-enriched metal matrix. The materials were tested for corrosion and tribocorrosion performance in 0.9 wt% NaCl at room temperature unde...

Wear of CoCrMo alloys used in metal-on-metal hip joints A tribocorrosion appraisal

A good biocompatibility, excellent mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance characterize CoCrMo alloys. Therefore they are widely used for artificial joints in biomedical implants. However, the degradation of the implants during service life leads to the release into the body of toxic ions and wear particles. This continuous degradation is of concern for long-term stability of the im...

Corrosion Behavior of Solution- Annealed CoCrMo Medical Implant Alloys

Corrosion behavior of solution annealed high-carbon and low-carbon CoCrMo wrought alloy, commonly used in medical joint implants, was investigated. The surface passivation properties remained similar with and without the various solution anneal conditions, while the rate of corrosion was lower for solution annealed high-carbon CoCrMo. Corrosion was found to target phase boundaries and certain g...

Influence of the sliding velocity and the applied potential on the corrosion and wear behavior of HC CoCrMo biomedical alloy in simulated body fluids.

The corrosion and tribocorrosion behavior of an as-cast high carbon CoCrMo alloy immersed in phosphate buffered solution (PBS) and phosphate buffered solution with bovine serum albumin (PBS+BSA) have been analyzed by electrochemical techniques and surface microscopy. After the electrochemical characterization of the alloy in both solutions, the sample was studied tribo-electrochemically (by ope...

An investigation on the biotribocorrosion behaviour of CoCrMo alloy grafted with polyelectrolyte brush.

Surface grafting of polyelectrolyte brush, such as 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SPMK), on hip implant materials has been reported to reduce the wear of the orthopaedic bearing surface. However, the biotribocorrosion behaviour of the SPMK brush has not been taken into consideration in previous research. In the present study, SPMK was grafted on Co28Cr6Mo alloy through photo-induced...
